Lessons on the art of interviewing.
Hey honeys and hustlers,
The pending release of Honey & Hustle’s newest season has me reminiscing over its early stages. The show has come so far in terms of production quality, the team behind it, and I’ve grown as an interviewer. I started the show with two cameras that both had a 30-minute recording limit, no team, and forgetting what question I was about to ask halfway through asking it. Not exactly a recipe for success. Better cameras and remote recording tools came as I was able to afford them, the team grew as my capacity to do “all the things” decreased, and my skills as an interviewer improved once I started studying the greats.
In the realm of interviewing, Zane Lowe has mastered the art of creating a space where people feel comfortable being vulnerable. Your favorite music artist, music group, or band has probably been interviewed by him after an album release. Through his unique interview style and thoughtful approach, he’s become a prolific interviewer, known for his ability to elicit deep and meaningful responses from his guests. In my latest video, I explore Zane Lowe's tips for being a better interviewer and how they can be applied to various forms of media.
Whether in podcasting, documentary filmmaking, or journalism, these tips can serve as a guide to help you focus on establishing trust, listening attentively, embracing authenticity, and pursuing topics of genuine interest. Here’s to acing your next interview, and not making the early mistakes that I did in my storytelling career.
Tomorrow’s guest on the podcast is the first person I interviewed once I started production for season 4. I may or may not have edited out the part where I forgot the name of his business when I first introduced him because I was so scatterbrained from hustling to get the space set up…..I still have much to learn. 😅
If you'd like to get serious about becoming a better interviewer, consider my workbook. This is the template I use to write notes from my interviews, which will keep your thoughts organized and help you plan for post-production and marketing.

Kajabi releases State of Creators ‘24
Kajabi spoke with 2,000+ creators to gain the insights compiled in this incredible breakdown of what trends are common among 6-figure creators. While it’s always interesting to see a breakdown of income streams, the influence of AI, and the increase of creators looking to build an email list or newsletter this year (gee, sounds familiar), this stat stood out:
60% of six-figure creators admit they’d consider working with brands that don’t align with their values if the paycheck were big enough.
Would you do the same?
