A Lens on The Triangle's Creative Ecosystem

Happy 919 day to all who celebrate! 🎉 For those who don’t know, 919 is the area code for the Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill) region of North Carolina. I moved to Durham in 2019, and my creative career has grown so much since then.

• I left the Atlanta-Birmingham-Columbus film industry and market.

• I left the financial security of living at home.

• I left the close mountains perfect for hiking near Birmingham.

• I left the creative community I’d grown to love in Birmingham and Atlanta.

So why have things been better for me since I’ve been here? Durham isn’t the place for every creative, but its where I’m my most creative self. I think that’s something that can’t be discounted when we think about where we want to start or grow a creative career. I’m inspired by how connected the region is through trails, trains, and bus infrastructure (while improvements are always welcome). I’m motivated by the diversity of creators and entrepreneurs I get to meet regularly. I’m encouraged by how Durham has truly fought to be an inclusive and welcoming space for so many. In honor of this made-up holiday, I’m celebrating by grabbing an early dinner at a local restaurant and sharing a Durham-based film with my community, near and far.
