I F*cked Up While Working with CBS Sports
Let's keep it real, now and forever.
Hey honeys and hustlers,
This is our last newsletter of 2023! But don’t worry, there’s still time to complete the survey to tell us what you’d like to see from us in 2024! I’ve got an extremely vulnerable confession from my time working with CBS Sports, some great documentary films out on YouTube, and some readworthy news to close out the year. My better late than never Christmas (or insert holiday you choose to celebrate) gift starts now!
Let’s Get Real For A Minute
My last speaking event of 2023 was at F*ck Up Nights Durham, hosted by TDS Radio at American Underground. When I was asked to recount a story where I royally messed up, this situation immediately came to mind. As I was crafting how I would tell this story, I felt…uncomfortable. I tell stories all the time, yes, but rarely about myself. It felt more vulnerable to share the parts of my story that led up to the mistake than the actual mistake itself! I’m glad I was given the opportunity and the platform to face that mistake publicly, own it, and reflect on how I’ve grown from it. I included the audio below in case you’d like to hear it. I’ll also make it available in the podcast tab in case you want to listen to it on your favorite streaming app.
I’d love to hear your feedback, and if you’re not afraid, a mistake you’ve made and learned from!

YouTubers can now offer 10 free channel memberships
If you’re looking to create and host your community exclusively on YouTube, they’ve heard your cries to make channel memberships accessible! Following in the footsteps of Patreon, they’ve added a way to offer free channel memberships. While limited, it could be a way for YouTubers to reward their most loyal subscribers who maybe can’t afford their premium content, winners of milestone giveaways, and more.
Along The Way
Garrett King aka Shortstache releases his first short film, an intimate look at his closest friendships under the Norwegian skies. He’s never really been active on YouTube, preferring to share his work and perspective on Instagram (and now, seemingly Threads). It was awesome to hear him talk about the film and his creative process ahead of the film’s release on the 505 Podcast.
Streamyard now allows you to livestream to Instagram
Streamyard has been the livestreaming platform of choice for many for years. It’s easy to use, has a free plan, and even has some recording features for those who want to record their livestreams (or in my case, podcasts). For folks just getting started with livestreaming, Streamyard allows for branded elements to enter the frame, and even has some built-in features to spice things up (like a countdown video). Instagram Lives has been one of the features brought to the platform that people still seem to love, and now, you get to level up the quality with Streamyard.
Will you be using this feature?
May The Lord Watch: The Little Brother Story
Little Brother is a rap group from right here in North Carolina. Their 20th anniversary was this year, and in addition to the block party they hosted in honor of the special occasion, they also shared the documentary film that recounts their story.
When people asked why they didn’t put the documentary on Netflix or another streaming service, the culmination of 3 years of filming with Rap Portraits, Big Pooh responded on Twitter:
“Platforms don’t validate our art or our story. We went with YouTube because EVERYONE has access to YouTube and we have access to our analytics. win win win.”
I’m happy to see the case for why films should be placed on YouTube as a more effective means of reaching an audience and having access to their analytics. They also released this film online in combination with some in-person screening events in Durham, New York, and Los Angeles. I’m here for the shift in thinking surrounding mainstream filmmaking and how to make and measure the impact films have.
Chucky (Mr. Beast team member) launches ViewStats
Chucky is the lead creator of YouTube thumbnails, reaction videos, and gaming videos for Mr. Beast, the prolific YouTuber from Greenville, NC. He recently founded View Stats, the platform that allows you to get data on other YouTube channels, like the variation in thumbnails they’ve used for a video. Steven Bartlett, the host of Diary of a CEO, recently revealed that he tests out 50+ headlines per video before they even premiere on his channel. I don’t think most YouTubers go to that extreme, but it’s nice to see what A/B testing others are doing and the thumbnail variations they create when in the research phase of a video or idea.
Adobe and Figma abandon their merger
With $20 Billion on the line, you’d think that these two companies could find a way to work together. In all fairness, I genuinely think they tried to, but ran into an unexpected roadblock regarding regulations in the UK. Figma attracts designers at all levels away from Adobe Creative Suite products, and the deeper truth is that Figma outshines Adobe when it comes to the modern design solutions it provides. Much in the way that Canva attracts creators with little to no design experience, Figma attracts designers who aren’t specialists and provides them with a platform that they can grow and scale with as they become more adept in their skillsets. While $20 Billion is an attractive offer, it seems that Figma has more to gain in the long run as an independent company.
