Treat Yo Self, Responsibly

A creator's guide to strategic self-investment.

Hey honeys and hustlers,

You most valuable asset isn't your equipment or software—it's you. While acquiring the latest gear or digital tools may make you feel excited in the moment, the most impactful investments often come from developing your skills, nurturing your creativity, and maintaining your well-being. So to indulge in a little post-birthday retail therapy, here are some ways you can invest in your creative business without buying software or gear:

  1. Coaching or consulting sessions. Getting an unbiased third-party opinion on critical decisions can be invaluable. I often seek advice for decisions I’m making in my creative business, and getting an outside perspective can help me see things I normally wouldn’t because I’m so close to the work. When was the last time you took a step back and asked for a valued opinion from someone who’s been in your shoes? Sometimes you don’t have to pay for this if you have one specific question, but there are services like Intro if you’re looking for something more structured. (I honestly wish I thought of this concept sooner.)

  2. A writing retreat or inspiration break. Making time to create for yourself is always needed. No deadlines, no expectations, just investing in time to create freely. I took an inspiration break to the Outer Banks last year and desperately want to take another more writing-focused inspiration break this year. I unlocked a lot of ideas and creative energy being in such a beautiful place with relatively no agenda other than to enjoy myself and the beach. What would you do if you planned a staycation? Where would you go if you planned an inspiration break?

  3. Accountability groups or coworking sessions. Peer learning is so underrated. And as someone who greatly benefits from body doubling, sitting in silence is also helpful. Sometimes just knowing that there’s someone who is going to hold us accountable and is on a shared journey with us can be so helpful. A few friends and I have been getting together for a newsletter mastermind, and I also make time to meet with folks 1:1 about what we’re working on and how we can help each other. Who’s a creator that you want to reach out to or reconnect with? If there’s someone I can connect you with, please let me know!

  4. Professional or creative conferences. Industry events introduce us to people we wouldn’t normally run into in our local, regional, and national communities. They’re also just a really fun way to learn and meet people, from potential collaborators to clients.

Ready to make 2025 your year?

  1. Flights and hotels for retreats, residencies, networking events, industry events, and workshops. When thinking about industry events, don’t forget the added cost of travel, and how the cost of travel largely depends on when you book. The earlier the better!

  2. New professional headshots. We all look different year after year, so you probably haven’t taken new photos of yourself recently. Getting some professional headshots gives you an easy way to feel confident updating your website, having assets to share on social media, or submitting images for speaking engagements.

  3. Ergonomic writing chair, standing desk, and desk accessories. If you’re like me, deep work sessions can be hours. Your desk should support your body adequately during that process. An ergonomic chair and desk, along with desk accessories can go a long way toward your spinal health.

  4. A gym membership or a bundle of gym classes. I love time in nature as much as the next person, but when it’s below 40 degrees, I’m not really excited to go outside for a walk or bike ride. In late 2023, I purchased a bundle of spin class sessions and really fell in love with indoor cycling. I mean, I got my butt kicked, but I appreciated the scheduled and rigorous ride. Don’t let the cold winter months keep you from moving!

  5. A subscription to a meal service. I love to cook, but I realize that not everyone does. Don’t let takeout be the enemy of a healthy home-cooked meal. Hello Fresh, Factor Meals, Blue Apron, and other options might be great alternatives to eating out.

The returns on self-investment often compound in unexpected ways. A single workshop might lead to valuable connections, new client opportunities, and fresh creative approaches that benefit your work for years to come.

These intangible investments also tend to be more recession-proof than physical assets. The knowledge, skills, and relationships you build through self-investment become part of your professional foundation that can't be taken away. Even in challenging economic times, these investments continue working for you, often becoming more valuable as others cut back on their development.

Investing in yourself isn't an indulgence—it's a strategic necessity for longevity. The key is to make thoughtful choices that align with your goals and values while maintaining a balance between your budget, your immediate needs, and long-term growth goals.
