What in the Myspace is going on?
Finding the right creative formats.
Hey honeys and hustlers,
Today is the day! If you’re in North Carolina, I’d love to see you at the Trail Therapy film screening tonight at 7PM at American Underground! We have a fun night planned and we can’t wait to host you! If you’re unable to join us in person, don’t worry! We’re working on scheduling a virtual premiere and will share the day and time once it’s ready.
I’ve been listening to podcasts about finding repeatable creative formats that work. This past weekend I attended Black August in the Park, Zack Fox’s comedy show, and a Sofar Sounds show here in the Triangle. Whether it’s an event, comedy routine, or concert, these are all repeatable creative formats. Colin and Samir put together a great masterclass on how to grow on YouTube and some of their advice can be summed up in this YouTube Short. To take it a step further, Jon Youshai was a guest on the Creator Science podcast and talked about turning those formats into serial content. While this advice is YouTube-specific, the same research methods can apply to newsletters/blogs, podcasts, and videos/films. TL:DR:
Research creators in the niche/topic/vertical you’re interested in creating content about. Write down the title and thumbnail formats that are working well.
Write 100 potential titles based on the formats that most apply to what you want to talk about.
Think of the series you can make from the formats you’re using the most.
If an idea and script are solid enough, it should be simple enough to capture with a phone and still be valuable.

Bucket hats. Mullets. Y2K parties. Digicams. MySpace. I did not see that making a comeback.
// Music is coming to Instagram profiles. Now we can all relive the glory days of MySpace together…on Instagram. What’s old is new again. Will they show your most active followers or close friends on your profile next? Stay tuned to see who makes your top 8!
// Threads has two major updates: their API is now available for most social media schedulers, and they have officially added analytics to the platform. I personally liked not knowing how many people saw what I posted (or didn’t post really), but I guess it’s a nice addition for people and brands using it to build their audience on the platform.
// The White House held its first Creator Economy Conference. Brett Dashevsky (Kickstarter and Creator Economy NYC) and Jack Appleby (Future Social) had some great recap articles that I think you’ll enjoy.
// Apple Podcasts is now available in your web browser. It is a seemingly minimal upgrade but likely highly appreciated by folks who prefer that experience when searching for podcasts in their browser (like me!). While Apple Podcasts has been making some small but necessary upgrades over the last year, I would like to see them lean into making video podcasting more accessible on their platform the way Spotify has.
// Founder of ProCreate takes aim at Adobe and Canva. As Canva announces a price hike in their premium plan, ProCreate Founder and CEO James Cuda says he’s never raising the price, a one-time fee of $12.99 on iPad and/or $5.99 on iPhone, and he’s never adding AI to the app. Canva will gradually raise their prices over the next 12 months, resulting in a double increase in their premium annual plan cost. Ouch.
// Podcast Movement in DC is over, but there are plenty of podcast events coming up before the end of the year! I’ll be attending Afros & Audio in Baltimore in October and would love to see you there! Use my code “AFAU24HNH“ for 15% off your ticket purchase!
Can’t wait to see you guys tonight!
